The iPhone Could Have Been Called 'TriPod' or 'Mobi'

"I just got a message on my TriPod!" Sounds a little odd, doesn't it? Well, it could've been a reality, as Apple considered the names TriPod, Mobi and TelePod -- among others -- for its iPhone, according to former Apple head of advertising Ken Segall.

Other names that Apple considered calling its iconic phone were TelePod and iPad, 9to5Mac reports.

Segall explains the reasoning behind each name that was considered -- Tripod is a play on the iPhone's triple functionality (iPhone, iPod and internet access), and Mobi is a simple play on the word "mobile". The iPad was another possible choice (remember, there was no iPad tablet back then, and the name was up for grabs), and TelePod simply sounded like a good combination of the words "telephone" and "iPod," which at the time was one of Apple's most important products.

Now that the word "iPhone" is imprinted into our collective consciousness, all those other names sound out of place. However, every product goes through this phase, and back when iPhone was merely a drawing or a prototype, naming it probably wasn't that simple of a decision.
