LONDON -- J.K. Rowling may have built up a reputation for being fairly formidable on Twitter, but she's also proved time and time again that she has a soft side.

The Harry Potter author re-enforced this on Mother's Day, when she sent out a special message to anyone whose mum isn't around anymore.

Today's Mother's Day in the UK. If your mum isn't here to treat, do something nice for yourself, because she's part of you. Take a hug, too— J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) March 6, 2016

It wasn't long before people were getting in touch with Rowling to share their own stories.

@jk_rowling lost my Mum 3 week ago The pain is overwhelming to think i will never get to see or speak to her again then mothers day comes by— Alan McGibney (@thegibosuk) March 6, 2016

@thegibosuk I'm so sorry. I remember feeling exactly as you do. I promise it gets better. You don't get 'over' it, but through it. (((hug)))— J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) March 6, 2016

J.K. Rowling's own mother, Anne Rowling, had multiple sclerosis and passed away in 1990. Rowling set up the Anne Rowling Regenerative Neurology Clinic in 2010 -- a research clinic that aims to find out more about neurological diseases like MS.

@jk_rowling I wanted to say thank you to you today. My mum has MS and thanks to your incredibly generosity she had experimental treatment— Ems (@emsler) March 6, 2016

@emsler I'm overwhelmed and delighted to hear that and my mum would have been, too! Give your mum my very best wishes xx— J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) March 6, 2016

@jk_rowling @emsler Remember what you said about people living on? Your Mum is living on in these patients. What a wonderful gift.— Lyra McKee (@LyraMcKee) March 6, 2016

@LyraMcKee @emsler Oh Lyra... bit wobbly now x — J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) March 6, 2016

@jk_rowling @emsler It's true. What a wonderful legacy to have. You gave her the best Mother's Day gift any daughter could.— Lyra McKee (@LyraMcKee) March 6, 2016
