LOS ANGELES -- Nightcrawler isn't your typical Hollywood Halloween movie -- and that's a good, creepy thing.

Jake Gyllenhaal plays an ambitious newbie paparazzi videographer in this neo-noir film that premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival to great acclaim. No supernatural scares here; Nightcrawler is horrifying in a visceral, cerebral and very grounded, making it perfect Halloween counter-programming.

In this red-band trailer from Open Road Films and exclusively shared with Mashable, Louis Bloom (Gyllenhaal) is propositioned by a more seasoned nightcrawler (Bill Paxton) who recognizes his talent early for tracking down and shooting grisly video opps.

Though Bloom is just starting out, he isn't selling out -- he's thinking bigger -- and Joe Loder (Paxton) is about to find out just how intensely intent Bloom is on pushing his way into the business.

Nightcrawler debuts next Friday in theaters nationwide.
