A man shot in the head by Minneapolis police early on Sunday has died after spending more than a day in critical condition at a hospital.

Jamar Clark, a 24-year-old black man, died Monday night.

Some witnesses say police shot Clark while he was handcuffed, though officers have denied the claim. They said Clark was a suspect in a domestic violence case and obstructed paramedics at the scene.

Protesters erected tents at the Fourth Precinct in north Minneapolis on Sunday night in an effort to demand transparency from officials; hundreds participated in a rally there. About 300 people protested on a Minneapolis highway on Monday night; 51 demonstrators were arrested.

Police said they would charge protesters with unlawful assembly and being pedestrians on a freeway, both misdemeanor offenses.

Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges requested a federal investigation into why and how police fatally shot Clark. Minnesota's Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is also investigating the shooting.

The two officers involved, who have not been publicly identified, were put on paid leave.
