Though Tom Hardy has apparently toppled Idris Elba to become the new favorite to play the next James Bond, he may not want to start celebrating yet -- amidst the kerfuffle, we all somehow missed that David Beckham's name has evidently been tossed into the hat.

Beckham seems an odd choice at first. But take the recent debate surrounding the next Bond, add in Beckham's confirmation that he's looking to begin an acting career, and you've got a rumor.

Unfortunately for fans, a spokesperson for Beckham dialed back on the rumors and told The Daily Mail that the soccer star "is not planning to step into the action hero's shoes any time soon, despite recently expressing his interest in acting."

Beckham, for his part, is aware of "the many sportsmen and other celebrities [who] have turned their hand to acting and failed," and is set on taking things slowly for now. His first baby step into the biz come through a cameo in Guy Ritchie's Knights of the Round Table.

"'I know that it is a tough profession, where you need a huge amount of skill and discipline, and I wouldn't want to push myself forward too soon, without learning more about it, and doing a lot more practice," he told The Times.

After all, let's not get ahead of ourselves -- Daniel Craig's seat isn't even cold yet. Not only does Spectre come to theaters this October, but he's also set to take at least one more turn in the Aston Martin for the as-yet-untitled 25th Bond film.
