American artist James Turrell designed a skyspace for Rice University that combines art with function.

It features a large white roof that offers a view of the sky through an opening for visitors sitting on the skyspace's upper and lower viewing areas. Two light shows take place each day -- at sunrise and sunset -- in conjunction with the arc of the sun. Lights are projected on the ceiling and they change color as the sun rises and sets, impacting the color of the sky as seen by visitors.

The structural piece of public art towers above a 12-foot-high grass hill just east of Rice's Shepherd School of Music.
