LOS ANGELES -- When Jem fans hit the theater for the upcoming live-action film starring Audrey Peeples, they should prepare their ears for a taste of something unfamiliar.
Producer Jason Blum says the movie, which he co-produced with music mogul Scooter Braun and John Chu (G.I. Joe: Retaliation), will feature primarily new songs. "There may be a little throwback," he said to reporters at panel for his new show Ascension on Syfy, "but most of the music is new and updated and great."
Die-hard fans of the 80s cartoon shouldn't fret about the new material, however: "There’s no bigger Jem fan than John Chu, so it wasn’t a corporate initiative to make Jem. It was really John who wanted to do it ... I don’t think the music will disappoint."
Announced back in April, Jem and the Holograms does not yet have a premiere date.
Production is currently wrapped and Blum is days away from seeing a first cut of a film, he said, but declined to give details, like whether or not it would be a period piece or info on Molly Ringwald's top-secret role ("It'd be a spoiler!"). Overall, though, the producer, who is primarily known for his work in the horror genre, said the project was attractive to him because it reflected his current interests in smaller-budget, high-concept material.
"I really am interested in low-budget, original ideas that can be widely realized," he said. "So Jem is perfect. We did it very inexpensively."
One thing they didn't have to skimp on, though? Pink -- and star pants.
