LONDON -- Jeremy Clarkson has admitted that his sacking from BBC's Top Gear was his "own silly fault."

The presenter, who was dismissed from the show following an investigation into a "fracas" with a producer, added that his departure had "left a huge hole" in his life.

Clarkson was talking to BBC Radio 2 presenter Chris Evans, a man who has been mooted as his replacement but refuted the suggestion, in his first proper interview since the controversy.

“I was very sad, it was my own silly fault so I could hardly complain,” he told listeners to the breakfast show.

He also admitted he had taken calls from other broadcasters interested in the Top Gear team, but refused to get drawn into speculation over the possibility of transferring to Sky or Netflix. “No, I haven’t had a single meeting,” he said. “I’ve just been listening.”

He said that his departure was very sudden, adding: "You’d be a fool to just jump into something. You need to look at what’s out there and what is the best thing to do."

“I was at the BBC for 27 years. You emerge and find the world has changed and you have to find out how the world works, which is what I have been doing.”

Clarkson, meanwhile, has been filming with his old Top Gear colleagues Richard Hammond and James May for the forthcoming Clarkson, Hammond and May Live tour, which kicks off in Belfast on May 22.

He said the show was Top Gear in everything but name, adding that the team are now "able to make their own films... without any meddling" from the BBC.

He hasn't taken his foot off the gas in terms of Twitter lately either, using his account to bait Parisians, taunt the Daily Mail and call Piers Morgan an "arse."
