Jimmy Fallon made his return to The Tonight Show Monday night following an incident that almost left him down finger.

The culprit? A braided rug.

Fallon came back to share the gory details, explaining, "I tripped and fell in my kitchen on a braided rug that my wife loves, and I can’t wait to burn it to the ground. I’m getting up and my finger is sideways.”

After getting into a cab and high-tailing it to the emergency room, Fallon was told that his finger was not broken, but that he had a case of "ring avulsion," in which his ring finger was caught on a glass table as he was trying to catch his fall, effectively pulling the finger out of place. (That detail elicited grossed-out groans from the audience.)

Fallon was sent to Bellevue Hospital in New York City to undergo microsurgery, during which a doctor in a bowtie and cowboy boots took a vein out of Fallon's foot to attach in his finger.

"Usually, they just just cut your finger off," Fallon quipped.

After 10 days in the intensive care unit, all was well, and he should get feeling back in that finger in about eight weeks.

The incident fortunately coincided with the show's usual two week hiatus, though it did force Fallon to beg off a day early.
