LONDON -- Refugees are welcome. That was the message J.K. Rowling tried to get across on Thursday via Twitter.

A day after a photo that showed a young Syrian boy's body washed up on a beach in Turkey was widely shared, the author added her support to the #refugeeswelcome hashtag, which was trending on Twitter.

If you can't imagine yourself in one of those boats, you have something missing. They are dying for a life worth living. #refugeeswelcome— J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) September 3, 2015

Rowling only used her account on Thursday to retweet other messages and stories that highlighted the refugee and migrant crisis.

The author has previously tweeted about refugees and migrants in Calais, condemning media coverage of the camp in the northern France port town known as the Jungle.

More than 300,000 refugees and migrants have traveled across the Mediterranean Sea this year. Some 200,000 ended up in Greece, while about 110,000 landed in Italy; so far, approximately 2,500 people have died or have gone missing as a result.
