Australia's former prime minister John Howard loved nothing more than a brisk stroll around his neighbourhood during his time in power, which lasted more than a decade.

In a fitting tribute on Tuesday, Australia's current Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is to honour the fighting-fit Howard with a dedicated walk around the nation's capital, Canberra. It is named none-other-than "The John Howard Walk of Wonder."

An overload of wonderment

Tourists, locals, young and old alike are in for a treat on "The John Howard Walk of Wonder," as the leisurely stroll around Canberra's Parliamentary Triangle takes just under an hour to complete.

The walk, created by Canberra science museum Questacon, will finally uncover some major mysteries, including " Why does Lichen grow on only one side of a tree?" "Does sound always echo?" and "How old is the ground we walk on?"

Howard may already know the answers, but the task has been left up to you and me, fellow citizens, to find out.

The announcement has been trending on Twitter today, with many remembering a simpler time when our nation's leaders preferred to exercise with their clothes on rather than without.

The walk looks suspiciously like a weapon

Some people have also noted the path of the walk looks -- in an abstract way -- like a gun.

One of Howard's most celebrated policies during his time as prime minister was heavy gun control regulation brought in after a mass shooting in Tasmania's Port Arthur in 1996. Perhaps someone who helped organize the "Walk of Wonder" thought he deserved a fitting tribute.

Howard's love of walking

Howard's love for the power-walk has been well documented. According to the Daily Telegraph he walked more than 20,000 kilometres (12,427 miles) during the time he was in office, from 1996 to 2007.

His retro outfits

A national treasure in its own right, Howard's preferred personal attire for walking -- a tracksuit in classic Aussie green and gold -- eventually became part of an exhibit at the Melbourne Cricket Ground's National Sports Museum.

It was a well-deserved tribute to a no doubt sweaty part of athletic history.

Walk on, Howard, walk on

Here's to you, Mr Howard, may you continue to walk as long as your legs will carry you.
