John Oliver has said aloud what the Australian people say aloud daily about Prime Minister Tony Abbott: "What's he doing?"

The British late night host is touring Down Under and apparently wasn't aware the PM eats whole onions for leisure. Luckily, an audience member brought Oliver up to speed in his final show at Sydney's State Theatre.

Audio from the event, as published by Junkee, reveals a hilarious conversation as David Potter tries to alert Oliver to the shocking facts of the story by yelling out from the back seats: "Did you see Tony Abbott eat the onion? The onion! Tony Abbott ate the onion!"

A mobile phone is handed to the horrified Oliver, who then relives Australian politics' favourite Vine bite by bite. "He ate an onion?" Oliver asks, shocked.

Oliver is then advised this was not a standalone event. Oliver screams: "He ate two?! Get the fuck out. The skin was on, what's he doing?"

We don't know, Oliver, and we have lived with the man for years. We have seen him come close to shirtfronting Vladimir Putin, wear drug dealer sunglasses and get around town in inappropriate budgie smugglers. But for some reason, the onion is the truest display of Abbott's bizarre public life.

"He needs constant supervision that man," Oliver continues. "It's not a great advertisement to compulsory voting that man. You get bored and you just see what you can do."

One of Potter's Facebook friends summed up the general feeling about the creator of this golden moment. "You are a credit to your country," Ti Wob wrote. Hear hear.
