This will easily go down as the most surprising cast news of the day -- and possibly the week: John Travolta has joined the cast of FX's forthcoming Ryan Murphy anthology American Crime Story , which in the first season will take on the O.J. Simpson trial.
Travolta will play Robert Shaprio, one of the members of Simpson's defense.

This will be his first role on starring role on television since Welcome Back, Kotter.
He joins the cast that already includes David Schwimmer, who will play Robert Kardashian, Cuba Gooding Jr as O.J. Simpsons and Sarah Paulson as Marcia Clark.
American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson, based on a book by Jeffrey Toobin, does not yet have a premiere date.
