LOS ANGELES -- Now you see him, soon you won't.

Johnny Depp, who stumbled his way into a $5 billion global movie blockbuster franchise based on a musty old Disneyland ride, has agreed to join Universal Pictures' monster-movie reincarnation as The Invisible Man, Mashable has confirmed.

Producer/writer Alex Kurtzman (responsible for the Transformers and Star Trek franchises, to just name a couple) is teaming with new partner Chris Morgan to reanimate Universal’s collection of movie monsters, including Frankenstein and his bride, Dracula, the Wolf Man, the Creature from the Black Lagoon and yes, the Invisible Man.

First out will be The Mummy, which recently signed Tom Cruise to star and is due in 2017. No word yet on when Depp would appear as the scientist who renders himself invisible, which will ostensibly be based on the 1933 film adaptation of the H.G. Wells novel.

Before Depp gets busy with that, he's a got a couple of big Disney projects to wrap up: The May release of Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass, and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales for next spring.
