Joost CTO Leaving for the BBC

[img src="" caption="" credit="" alt=""]Dirk-Willem van Gulik, Chief Technical Officer (CTO) of Joost, has landed a new job as Chief Technical Architect at the BBC Future Media and Technology Group.

Mr. Gulik will be making the move in February to the world's largest broadcasting group, and will be focusing on the the next generation of Internet interactivity for the BBC's online ventures such as bbc.co.uk, BBCi and BBC Mobile. During his time at Joost, a peer-to-peer online video service, he was one of the main people behind developing their technologies and platform.

Erik Huggers, Controller of the BBC division, says that "The BBC recognizes that IP-connectivity is quickly moving beyond the personal computer." He went on to add that "this appointment signals our commitment to providing license-fee payers access to BBC content however they want it." A novel concept in this day-and-age where so many companies are trying to figure out how to restrict how users access their content.

Mr. Gulik has been heavily involved with the open source movement over the years, and is currently president of the Apache Software Group, makers of the popular Apache server software.
