Behind every great book is a great author. Behind every great author is a secret well of knowledge, wisdom and experiences.
Kate Gavino hopes to bring that knowledge to the forefront with her new book, Last Night's Reading: Illustrated Encounters with Extraordinary Authors. Throughout the book, which originally started out as a Tumblr in 2013, Gavino documents the wisdom proffered by writers in New York City's literary scene by pairing doodled portraits of writers with quotes from their readings.

"Writing is a solitary activity but at a reading, writers are with their audience, talking about what matters to them most," Gavino writes in the forward to Last Night's Reading. "They are excited! They are tipsy! They are wise! And I get to share what I see and here with you."
