PHOENIX -- The Super Bowl halftime show once again kicked off with a flashy 30-second video from Pepsi, which, through the wonders of CGI, transformed the University of Phoenix Stadium into a spaceship and gave a nod to some weird Arizona history.

Produced by Mekanism and the team behind the Oscar-winning film Gravity, the "Halftime Touches Down" spot aired just seconds before Katy Perry sang her first note.

The extraterrestrial elements are based off events from March 1997, when many locals claimed they saw strange triangular lights beaming above Phoenix's South Mountain.

The spot gets prime real estate during Sunday's Super Bowl festivities. More people watched Bruno Mars' halftime show last year than the actual football game. Last February, Bruno Mars had the most-watched halftime show ever with 115.3 million viewers, beating out Beyonce's 2013 effort, which attracted 110.5 million.
