LONDON -- Miners at Kellingley coal mine in North Yorkshire worked their last shift on Friday, marking the closure of the UK's last coal mine and an end to a once-mighty industry.

Many of the miners have spent their entire working lives at the mine and don't know what they will do next. Emotions ran high among the workers, who have formed a tight bond after spending so many years together in the deep pit.

On Saturday, thousands of people in nearby Knottingley marched to mark the closure of the mine.

“It’s like losing part of your family, like grieving," said Mark Phelan.
