Scan These Smart Pajamas to Read Your Kids a Bedtime Story

No bedtime routine with your kids is complete without a good story. And now, one Idaho-based company has added a futuristic twist to the age-old ritual.

Smart PJs, based in Idaho Falls, Idaho, has designed unique pajamas for children that feature colorful polka-dor patterns. But this isn't any ordinary sleepwear: The printed dots on the fabric work like QR codes, as shown in the above video.

Using a smartphone, parents can scan the dot patterns on their child's pajamas, unlocking a story with pictures and words on the screen. What's more, a free companion app can even recite the tales aloud.

The $25 pajamas are available for both boys and girls, from ages 1 to 8.

Smart PJs could be handy for vacations when you can't pack your children's bookshelf in a suitcase, but still want to tuck them in with a bedtime story. Or it could just make for a fun, new bedtime tradition in your house.

It's important to note, however, the pitfalls of using smartphones before bed since they can affect the body's sleep cycle. In fact, researchers at the Lighting Research Center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute found that two or more hours of exposure to backlit devices can suppress melatonin by up to 22%. The chemical melatonin helps promote sleep in the body.
