Photo Series Documents Tiny Kittens From Rescue to Adoption

Photographer Alex Greenshpun put her camera skills to inspiring use when she documented a litter's recovery from abandonment to adoption.

In early May, Greensphun and her partner discovered a cardboard box with five small kittens hidden inside. They were dirty and begging for food, and looked no older than a few weeks. She took them into her home, cleaned and fed them and created a warm space for them to sleep and play.

Two months later, the kittens were healthy and ready for adoption. Three have found forever-homes, and two are still awaiting adoption.

While there is no way to track the number of animals abandoned each year, the ASPCA estimates that 6-8 million dogs and cats in the U.S. enter animal shelters each year. Greenshpun told Mashable that she's happy to have made even a small contribution.

"If there's any message behind the story and photos worth spreading, apart from the obvious 'adopt, don't shop,' it is that spaying and neutering our pets can save countless lives," she said. "Our kittens were lucky, but many are not."
