Step away from the cheese.

Kraft has recalled a selection of American cheese singles over fears people may choke on the plastic wrapping. Apparently, a small section of the plastic has the potential to remain connected to the cheese after unwrapping.

It has already caused the choking of three Americans and 10 complaints, according to a statement by Kraft.

On Friday, the company asked for the return of 36,000 cases of Kraft Singles American and White American Singles. It applies only to the 3-pound and 4-pound sizes with a used-by date of Dec. 29, 2015 to Jan. 4, 2016.

Even if you have managed to get through the plastic wrapper nightmare and are currently frying up a grilled cheese sandwich, Kraft has a dire warning: "Consumers who purchased this product should not eat it." Put down your sandwich.

"We deeply regret this situation and apologize to any consumers we have disappointed," Kraft wrote in the statement. Disappointed? More like devastated.
