Many children can't sleep the night before Christmas because they're so excited for Santa's arrival.

It's a different story for children in eastern Europe, where a creepy Christmas demon haunts dreams. This past weekend, people dressed up as Krampus creatures and walked the streets in Kaplice, Czech Republic.

Krampus, a horned figure of old central European folklore, is a demon-like creature traditionally represented with hand-carved wooden masks, suits made from sheep or goat skin, and large cow bells attached to the waist.

He's something of a foil to Saint Nicholas -- Krampus punishes the bad children while St. Nick rewards the good ones. Some towns have street festivals to celebrate Krampus, but in others, the creatures wander the streets alone. They're so bizarre and terrifying that some towns in eastern Europe have had to tell Syrian refugees not to be afraid.
