Hasbro and Lionsgate announced this morning that the studio -- best known in recent years for YA-friendly franchises like Twilight, The Hunger Games, and Divergent -- is teaming with the toy company to distribute Hasbro's previously announced My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic film. The movie is based on Hasbro's eponymous animated TV series, a hit among kids and grown-ups alike.
The pair also revealed that the big-screen adaptation's cast will feature a new face -- er, voice: Kristin Chenoweth, joining as an unnamed new character.
Presumably, she's playing a pony.
Here's the film's logline:
In the movie, a new dark force threatens Ponyville, and the Mane 6 – Twilight Sparkle, Applejack, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy and Rarity – embark on an unforgettable journey beyond Equestria where they meet new friends and exciting challenges on a quest to use the magic of friendship and save their home.
In addition to Chenoweth, the cast features the stars of Friendship Is Magic: Tara Strong, Cathy Weseluck, Andrea Libman, Tabitha St. Germain and Ashleigh Ball.
This My Little Pony movie follows in the hoofprints of My Little Pony: Equestria Girls, a spin-off film that had a limited theatrical release in 2013 before being broadcast on Hasbro's Hub Network. The new film is set for a 2017 release.
