With tech out of the picture, 'Last Man on Earth' is rather timeless

In a fictional world in which nearly every human has been wiped out by a disease, as you might guess, there's very little technology on Fox's Last Man on Earth.

Cell phones, the Internet, social media -- none of those really rank high on the priority lists of Phil (Will Forte) and Carol (Kristen Schaal), the last two people on the planet.

But that's what makes it a special show, says Schaal, who spoke to Mashable about the series, which premiered last week.

"You can turn on a TV show and almost all the plot lines are tied to, 'My cell phone died' or an important call or computers -- because that's our life now," the actress says. "But that doesn't exist in this world and it's really refreshing, actually."

The series, which opened to solid ratings with 5.7 million viewers, loses nothing as a result, Schaal says. If anything, it gains from the fact that there's only one way for the characters, whose relationship had a rocky start, to communicate their feelings.

"They can't unfriend each other on Facebook, but pretty much do it every five minutes in real-life," she jokes. "You really have to look into a person's eyes more in that world than in this one."

One teaser, though: Carol and Phil find a way to stay in contact when not physically together in the third episode, which airs Sunday. Moreover, the duo's situation will be turned upside down by the end of the half-hour, which, Schaal promises, only makes for more craziness in their already insane lives.

"I think the essence of the show is so boiled down to the basics of humanity that I think it does have a broad appeal," Schaal says.
