Despite some weird trademark filings, LG has not acquired Meerkat.

News that the Korean electronics giant may have acquired the streaming video started to swirl after Phandroid uncovered a trademark filed by LG for an application called, "Meerkat."

The trademark seems to be for an application that would work as an IP camera, closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera and for surveillance.

But not to fear: Ben Rubin, CEO and founder of Meerkat, tweeted that the official comment from his team is that this is just a joke.

LMAO (that's meerkat's official comment) http://t.co/8KCYFpw15t— Ben Rubin (@benrbn) June 1, 2015

"We have no idea whats going on in [LG's] mind trying to trademark it," Rubin told Mashable in an email.

Meerkat made a big splash in February before taking over early adopters at SXSW 2015. The service faces stiff competition from Periscope, which is owned by Twitter, but has still managed to secure $14 million in funding from Greylock Partners, YouTube cofounder Chad Hurley, Jared Leto and Ashton Kutcher's VC fund.
