LG announced an octa-core NUCLUN chip on Thursday, a mobile application processor built for “high performance and low energy consumption,” and next-gen LTE networks.

The chip will debut in the company’s new G3 Screen, a 5.9-inch phone resembling the company’s popular LG G3 device. The only catch: its G3 Screen is developed specifically for the Korean market, according to LG.
When the chip makes it to LG’s other smartphone offerings, it will pack a nice punch. LG says it uses four 1.5GHz cores and four 1.2GHz cores -- the number of performing cores dynamically adjusts for performance and battery life.
“NUCLUN opens up a new chapter in LG’s history of innovation in the mobile industry … [it] will give us greater flexibility in our mobile strategy,” LG CEO Jong-seok Park said.
LG is taking a page out of the playbook of Samsung (and Exynos, and Huawei), which touts an application processor of its own: the Samsung Exynos.
It remains to be seen whether LG’s NUCLUN chip will make it into the company’s next flagship phone for the U.S. market.
