LG Display has unveiled an extremely thin and light OLED display prototype, paving the way for a new generation of super-thin TVs.
The new OLED panel measures 55 inches diagonally, weighs 4.2 pounds and is only 0.97mm (0.04 inches) thick. Best of all -- you can simply stick it to a wall with a magnetic mat.
The panel, shown during a media event in Korea Tuesday and first reported by the Yonhap News Agency, is just a prototype, meaning actual devices using it could still be ways off. But LG Display is serious about large OLED panels, which are slowly creeping into the mainstream, currently still occupied by LED panels.
The head of LG Display's OLED division Yeo Sang-deog said the company plans to ramp up OLED display production in Q3 of 2015. Overall, LG Display plans to sell 600,000 OLED displays in 2015 and 1.5 million in 2016.
"We should be able to supply a satisfactory volume to our clients from July or August, which means we're hoping to buckle down production as well as promotion from the third quarter," Sang-deog told reporters at the event.
LG showed off seven new OLED TV sets at this year's CES in January, ranging from 55-inch to 77-inch models. At Tuesday's event, LG also announced it will be launching a 99-inch OLED TV -- though it likely won't be as thin as the prototype above.
