LibraryThing has always been rather dedicated to the organized and community approach to personalizing the online book "collection" while being able to share the information with others. The next logical step is to further bridge the gap between the online and offline worlds, especially as reading a book in the physical sense is still the preferred way of text consumption (as opposed to publishers embracing an online book-reading tool).

So LibraryThing has just launched LibraryThing Local, which looks to bring information about offline venues and events to users that may be interested in finding a bookstore in a different town while traveling, or finding out about the next book signing by their favorite author.

This Local segment of LibraryThing is really looking to centralize the information necessary for connecting your book collection (real and virtual) with the physical manifestation of your reading hobbies. This service is supported by user generated content, so it's not fully populated just yet, but the necessary tools are there: bookmarking for saving events, RSS feeds for staying updated, etc.

Frankly I'm surprised that many of these book communities haven't jumped into this some time ago, though we have seen some moves towards online communities moving in this direction, like BookTour. In fact, LibraryThing local began as a partnership with BookTour, which was officially launched by author Chris Anderson last year as a way to provide a self-marketing tool for authors while connecting with readers on a local level.
