LinkedIn Gets Profile Photos

This Friday, professional social network LinkedIn will provide the ability to add a photo to your profile page. It's clearly a move that aims to keep up with Facebook, which increasingly looks set to steal LinkedIn's audience.

But I also think it's valuable: it's extremely hard to identify or remember a person based on a name alone, and frankly faces are the way humans have always interacted offline (email fails on this point, and I expect we'll see social networking brought to Gmail and other services soon). You'll be limited to one picture of size 80x80 pixels, and you'll have the option to prevent viewing of the photo by people outside your network.

LinkedIn is also trying to catch up with Facebook through the launch of a LinkedIn developer platform, which is still in development.
