LinkedIn currently has more than 175 million members, with 50 million of those members joining the service in just the past year alone. To put that growth in perspective, in 2009, LinkedIn had just 32 million people.

Tuesday the company held a press conference at its Mountain View, Calif., campus to announce the next-generation of the service, and updated look and feel for the service that it is calling “The New LinkedIn.” The update which began rolling out on Tuesday, includes a new look to profile pages, new features and updated versions of the the LinkedIn apps.

"LinkedIn is about connecting talent with opportunity at massive scale,” Jeff Weiner LinkedIn CEO said at the event. Something that the company hopes will get a look easier with the redesigned site.

“With this new design were streamlining profile editing, ” Aaron Bronzan, product manager for LinkedIn said that the event. “We’ve taken profile editing and rebuilt it from the ground up.”

The top of your LinkedIn profile is updated with a larger photo and a more Spartan look for your expertise and background.

The profile editing process has been streamlined, making the page editing experience both easier and more intuitive.

When visiting a connection’s page you can see at a glance what you might have in common with that person, and what LinkedIn members are similar to that person. You can like and comment on posts and status updates your connections have made, as well as share out those posts to your connections.

LinkedIn has also updated its service on the app front. The iPad app added the ability to overlay your work calendar information with LinkedIn information, so you can learn more about people you might have meetings with that day. You can also see what your connections are commenting and liking on the service, and get access to news and information about what’s happening on LinkedIn.
