There are a number of ways in which to use web-based programs to learn languages online, some of which offer live web-cam courses, and others of which present user-generated tests for other users to take. One program I've personally found more comprehensive than most other web-based apps is Livemocha.
Today, Livemocha has just added courses for four new languages, as well as a poking Facebook app. Because everyone loves to poke. The four new languages include Russian, Italian, Japanese and Portuguese, meaning Livemocha now has 10 language courses for users to take advantage of.
And about this poking Facebook app? It lets you send fun, insulting and flirty messages to your friends in other languages (these are the most important phrases you'll need to learn anyway, right?). Languages available for the Facebook app include German, French, Spanish, Hindi or Mandarin Chinese. Now you're encouraging your friends to learn new languages too. ;)
