Los Angeles is freaking out about a mysterious 'blue light' in the night sky

A bright light that streaked across the night sky in Los Angeles Saturday night had people gasping from Hollywood to Long Beach.

Amazed skywatchers--some even as far away as Scottsdale, Arizona and Las Vegas, Nevada-- saw what looked like a blue spotlight and promptly took to social media to freak out. But the light source was far from otherworldly. It was caused by a military exercise off the Southern California coast, a Coast Guard spokesperson told Mashable after receiving a number of frantic calls.

The Trident II (D5) missile, which was not armed, was launched from the USS Kentucky, an Ohio Class ballistic missile submarine, according to a Navy statement, which noted that the test was classified before the launch. The statement did not disclose exactly where at sea the test took place, but the Coast Guard spokesperson had told Mashable earlier that it was in the waters near Point Mugu Naval Air Station.

It's not unusual for test rockets to put on a stunning light show, sometimes up to hundreds of miles away. A similar spectacle took place last month when a rocket was launched off the Florida coast. It's possible that the rocket trail from this missile test picked up sunlight as it shot above the horizon after sunset. Although it was dark on the ground when the light was spotted, sunlight was still present in the upper atmosphere.
