Following a weekend of historic flooding in South Carolina, one Facebook page is working to return lost pets to their owners.
Since Friday, more than two feet of rain has fallen in the region, leaving dogs, cats and even horses stranded. (And the flooding isn't over yet, either.) Lost & Found Pets of South Carolina has been uploading photos of missing pets, some of which come at the request of worried owners. Others show rain-soaked cats and dogs that have been rescued but not yet identified.
While many posting on the page are still looking for their pets, Lost & Found Pets of South Carolina has successfully led some missing animals back home.
Update, October 5, 12:30 P.M.: Mashable reached out on Facebook to administrators managing Lost & Found Pets of South Carolina. Eric Stamey shared more information regarding the group's initiatives this past weekend.
"As the flood waters recede, we see that animals have discovered outside cats that have disappeared and dogs that have been scared off from their territories. However, as the hours go by, the rivers will begin to swell now as the flood waters run from the mountains to the midlands and to the coast; we expect that more pets will be affected as these conditions begin to worsen in a new, horrible way."
He pointed to the Carolina Wildlife Center as one organization affected by the flooding. Staff members were forced to move animals in their care to a local church.
Stamey did have one positive story to share. After Lost & Found Pets of South Carolina shared a photo of a horse whose barn had washed away, the animal was successfully reunited with its owner.
