A judge set bail at $1 million each on Monday for two Louisiana marshals who fatally shot 6-year-old Jeremy Mardis and seriously wounded his father last week following a car chase with Mardis' father.

Marksville City marshals Derrick Stafford and Norris Greenhouse Jr., who also work for the city's police force, were charged with second-degree murder and attempted murder. If they post bail, they would be legally confined to their homes. Both are on leave from the Marksville police department.

Officials said the marshals had tried to serve a warrant to the boy's father, Chris Few, after which Few fled in his car. But an investigation by Louisiana State Police determined there was no warrant out for Few's arrest.

Few drove into a dead end, and when he began to back out, the marshals reportedly opened fire. The officers fired 18 times, hitting Few and killing his son. They shot Mardis in the face and chest.

Few remains in serious condition.

Police watched body camera footage from another officer on the scene to help their investigation, though that video has not been made available to the public.

"I've been a police officer for 35 years, but as a father -- much less as a state police -- it was a disturbing, disturbing video that I watched," State Police Col. Michael Edmonson said on CNN on Sunday.

Mardis will be buried on Monday in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where his mother lives.
