Luxology Gets Pixar Patent in License Agreement

Luxology, a technology company that creates 3D content creation software, has signed an agreement with Pixar for the licensing of Pixar's Subdivision Surface Patents to Luxology. This means that key Pixar proprietary computer graphics technology can be incorporated into Luxology products, and passed onto those that utilize Luxology software. The specifics and financial details of the agreement were not disclosed. There's also no word on exactly when Pixar's Subdivision Surface technology will be fully integrated into Luxology's software.

But the creation of 3D products is becoming less expensive, and more accessible, especially with deals such as this, lined out between Luxology and Pixar. Since Pixar is such a standard for 3D representation and animation, it's a big deal for all parties involved. We're seeing the use of 3D tools being offered in smaller scale applications like SceneCaster's Facebook app, which moves beyond commercial products or larger efforts such as Second Life. EA is taking initiatives for developing its online market, with the acquisition of SCI.
