13 Lytro Photos That Will Make You Look Twice

That signature feature is much more than just a convenience. It allows you to tell stories in a completely different way with your photos. Changing the subject in focus, by its nature, almost always alters the meaning of the image. Focus on the happy woman in the foreground, for example, and it's a light moment. Zero in on the stern man in the background looking at her, and you've got creepy.

We've been playing with the Lytro camera for a little while (check out our full review here), and we've had the chance to use it with some great subjects and interesting locations. We thought we'd share with you some of our favorite photos that we've taken so far -- pics that different story than a regular single-focus image could ever show.

Him vs. Her

In a simple demonstration of the Lytro, you can see there's a story to be told that focusing on the woman in the background reveals.

Window Valentine

Once you focus on the background in this picture, you can see the Cupid decal is overlooking a junkyard.

Plane Ridges

The hull of a plane on display at New York's Intrepid Museum reveals the ridge detail throughout this perspective shot.

Stormtrooper

By clicking on the tip of the gun barrel, you can see detail you wouldn't get by clicking on the trooper or the back wall.

Bubble Tube

Focusing on the tube up front or the woman in the background changes the story of this photo.

Stone Script

The Lytro lets you focus on any detail in this chiseled stone.

Helicopters

Pick any helicopter in this photo to focus on to bring out more detail.

Thomas & Friends

Captured with the Lytro camera's Creative Mode, this photo lets you focus on any of the four toy engines -- and even any part. Click on the chair in the background puts them all out of focus.

LEGO Planes

This array of LEGO planes with a window in the background gives many different things the viewer can choose to focus on.

Lizard Peek-a-boo

Here you can see clearly the lizard, what it's peeking out from behind, and the sign in the background.

Dalek vs. Cyberman

Two classic Doctor Who villains square off. When you focus on the Cyberman in the background, you can see its arm is outstretched. Also note that the Dalek's eye is always a bit blurry, showing the that the Lytro has limits as to what it can capture sharply.

Bubble Tube at Angle

The angle on this photo lets you pick any bubble in the tube as your target of focus -- which also lets you know where it is in the tank.

Mashable Logo

C'mon -- we had to. Taken in Creative Mode, with the lens right up against the "M." Note that you can focus outside the window, making the whole logo blurry.
