IDG is shuttering the print arm of Macworld, its last remaining print publication and it has axed much of its editorial staff. Macworld will continue as an online only publication, albeit with a reduced workload.
A number of senior Macworld editors and reporters shared the layoff news on Twitter.
Pretty much the whole Macworld staff has been let go. Looks like the end. Sad— Roman Loyola (@pinatubo2000) September 10, 2014
Macworld print is going away, but http://t.co/a5AlpdFPks will continue.— Dan Miller (@drm510) September 10, 2014
After 10 years as a Macworld editor, I’m a freelancer again (along with too many of my colleagues). Sad day for me, but also for Macworld.— Dan Frakes (@DanFrakes) September 10, 2014
Macworld Editor Dan Miller said he is staying on for another month to help with the transition.
Jason Snell, a senior vice president at IDG Consumer and SMB and the editorial director, at Macworld, PCWorld and TechHive, also announced that he is leaving after 17 years. Snell is slated to write the final front-of-book column in the November issue of Macworld.
The closure of Macworld's print edition comes several years after other IDG publications, including PCWorld transitioned to digital only.
The news is dispiriting, especially as it comes just a day after Apple's big iPhone 6 and Apple Watch announcement. Macworld started in 1984, timed with the release of the original Macintosh.
Yesterday, we lost the iPod Classic. Today, it seems, we lost Macworld. I'll get over the Classic, can't see getting over other.— Rob Griffiths (@rgriff) September 10, 2014
