The nationalities of some of those on board remain unknown but the majority of the passengers came from the Netherlands, Australia and Malaysia, according to official statements by Malaysia Airlines. While families of the victims await answers about exactly what happened and who is responsible, makeshift memorials sprang up around the Dutch embassy in Kiev amid mounting tensions between Ukrainian and Russian officials.
