A 29-year-old German man has died after an apparent attempted robbery of a condom vending machine.

The event, which involved three men, happened on Christmas Day in Schoeppingen, Germany. According to the BBC, the men attached homemade explosives to the vending machine, taking cover inside their vehicle during the explosion.

However, one man was unable shut the vehicle door and a piece of metal shrapnel from the explosion struck him in the head.

The man was taken to the hospital by his accomplices, where he later died.

Originally, the accomplices told hospital workers that the man sustained his injuries from falling down the stairs, but one of the men eventually admitted to police that the head injury occurred from the vending machine explosion.

Police later confirmed that no condoms or cash were stolen from the exploded machine.
