Hasn't your mom ever told you not to text and whale-watch?

Photographer Eric Smith captured a man off the coast of Redondo Beach, California, engrossed in his phone, while a humpback whale casually lounged just feet from his boat.

A sign of the times. Hey dude! Stop texting. There's an enormous humpback whale two feet from your boat! Shot this a couple weeks ago a mile from Redondo. A photo posted by E. Smith (@esmith_images) on Feb 2, 2015 at 11:03pm PST

"The whales were breaching off Redondo, and this small sailboat maneuvered into the spot where the spout occurred," Smith wrote in the image's comments section. "The guy never looked up from his phone throughout the entire breach. Two women at the front of the boat were taking pictures, but he didn't notice."
