"Profound," "intelligent," "poignant" — these are the words Marc Jacobs used to describe Lana Wachowski. The latter is the newest face of the designer's Spring/Summer 2016 ad campaign. Wachowski is a 50-year-old influential film director who happens to be transgender.

“This season’s ad campaign represents a series of connected events; a visual narrative," Jacobs wrote on Instagram. "It is a personal diary of people who have and continue to inspire me and open my mind to different ways of seeing and thinking.”

Jacobs first encountered Wachowski on YouTube in December 2012, when he watched her acceptance speech for the Human Rights Campaign's Visibility Award. He was inspired, describing the speech as "utterly profound in its script and her articulate, brilliant and timeless delivery."

Her presence and bravery made Wachowski an ideal face for Jacobs' latest campaign, a series celebrating people who represent what he calls "[his] America."

Wachowski has directed films like The Matrix, V for Vendetta and Cloud Atlas, as well as the television series Sense8, all complex and futuristic titles.

Jacobs is one of many labels to recently feature transgender models in ad campaigns. & Other Stories, an H&M owned label, did so last August when it collaborated with models Hari Nef and Valentijn De Hingh.
