Even Google is into the idea of flowing water on Mars.

The Google Doodle on Tuesday features a little red planet (yes, that's Mars) gulping down a cup of water, following NASA's announcement on Monday about the first strong evidence that liquid water occasionally flows on Mars.

Scientists using NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter announced that the spacecraft found hydrated minerals that are indicative of seasonal water flows on some Martian slopes. The new finding could have implications for past or even current life on Mars because the flows could be an indication that Mars has glaciers beneath its surface, possibly making the planet friendly to microbial life.

The water flows found by the spacecraft aren't like streams or even trickles of water on Earth. The salty water flows are actually more like "thin layers of wet soil," Alfred McEwen, one of the authors of the new study detailing the water findings, said Monday.

Google often honors big announcements and events with doodles on its homepage. The Mars doodle appeared on its homepage in the United States as well as internationally.
