Looks like Ridley Scott is getting the last laugh.

Throughout Sunday's Golden Globe Awards, Ricky Gervais has poked fun at the Hollywood Foreign Press for calling Scott's latest film, The Martian, a comedy. (Which may or may not be a fair point -- though the film does feature action and drama, it's also filled with quips, most of them spoken by star Matt Damon's stranded astronaut.)

Despite the intimations of category fraud, though, Scott emerged victorious when his movie walked away with one of the night's biggest prizes: Best Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical. It beat out the likes of Joy

"Where've you been?" Scott joked as he gazed upon his new statue. "I was beginning to think this was going to be posthumous."

Scott then launched into a lengthy speech that touched on the movie business in general, Star Wars: The Force Awakens' massive box office (which Scott called "inspiring"), and a long, long list of people Scott wanted to thank for The Martian's success. All the while, he dismissed the swelling music trying to play him offstage ("screw you!").

Even so, Scott ended the speech on a somber note: "My brother Tony would've been here for sure," he said, drawing cheers. Scott's younger brother, the celebrated director of films like Top Gun and True Romance, committed suicide in 2012.
