Netflix and Disney-owned Marvel announced a deal on Thursday that will bring four original series featuring iconic superheroes to the online streaming service.
The programming won't start until 2015, but the first of the four 13-episode series will feature Marvel's Daredevil. Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage will all have their own live-action series following Daredevil's lead.
The story lines will unfold over multiple years of original programming, Marvel explained in a statement.
The partnership also includes a mini-series event featuring Marvel's "The Defenders," which will cap off the four series.
"Netflix offers an incredible platform for the kind of rich storytelling that is Marvel’s specialty," said Alan Fine, president of Marvel Entertainment said in the statement. "This serialized epic expands the narrative possibilities of on-demand television."
The episodes will be produced by Marvel Television and ABC Television Studios exclusively for Netflix.
The Marvel series are part of Netflix's push for more original content. The company has already provided users with such series as Orange Is the New Black and House of Cards, and will soon begin streaming its first original full-length documentaries.
