The past doesn't always stay in the past.

That's certainly true in our latest MashableReads book selection, City on Fire by Garth Risk Hallberg. The book explores New York City in the '70s by following a cast of characters -- teenage punks, city heirs, a detective, a journalist -- all of whom orbit around a unsolved shooting that occurs on New Year's Eve. In addition to being a compelling mystery, City on Fire is also a time machine that shines a light on New York City's history.

Inspired by City on Fire and its exploration of the past, we want to see your vintage photos.

Our tip: Think outside of the box. If you want to share an old polaroid, play with framing. (Inspiration here.) Or show us objects with storied histories. For instance: The Empire State Building is a staple of the New York City skyline, but it is also a historically significant building that opened during the Great Depression and showcases features of the Art Deco architectural movement.

Submit your photos by 11:59 P.M ET on Sunday, January 17, and be sure to tag your photos with hashtag #MashReads_Vintage.

We'll share our favorites on Mashable, and one lucky winner will be selected as our grand-prize winner. Click here for official contest rules.
