Who better for a blockbuster time-travel reboot than a real Time Lord?

Doctor Who star Matt Smith has been cast in the Terminator reboot as a new character with a "strong connection" to John Connor, Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions announced Friday. Little else is known about Smith's role, other than his close ties to the resistance leader, played by Jason Clarke of Zero Dark Thirty.

Arnold Schwarzenegger will reprise his role as the Terminator, while Game of Thrones actress Emilia Clarke will portray Sarah Connor. Before the Terminator reboot hits theaters July 1, 2015, moviegoers will see Smith alongside Mad Men's Christina Hendricks in the Ryan Gosling-directed Lost River later this year.

Smith is well-known for playing the Doctor Who's 11th Doctor from 2011 to 2013 before he was replaced by Peter Capaldi during last year's Christmas special.

The reboot will be the fifth movie in the franchise -- which has raked in nearly $1.5 billion at the worldwide box office -- following The Terminator (1984), Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991), Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003) and Terminator Salvation (2009).

Alan Taylor will direct the reboot written by Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier. Other cast members include Jai Courtney, J.K. Simmons, Dayo Okeniyi and Byung Hun Lee.
