LONDON -- Engineering students from Queen's University in Belfast set a world record Saturday with their bridge built from model construction system Meccano that spans 100 feet across Clarendon dock.
Representatives from Guinness World Records confirmed it has set a world record for largest ever Meccano construction.
They used more than 11,000 pieces of Meccano in the yearlong project. The bridge weighs 600 kg (about 1,300 lbs).
The bridge had to be over 23 metres (75.5 feet) long and 12 metres (39.4 feet) wide to beat the previous record.

The bridge was created by civil engineering students and schoolchildren as part of an outreach program to encourage interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) careers. See how they created the bridge in the video below.
