Mercora, the peer-to-peer music sharing service that works over IM, has released a musical slideshow widget for MySpace, Piczo, hi5, Friendster, Windows Live Spaces and blogs.

The Mercora MusicMatrix lets you display 9 of your favorite artists on your page and conduct a Mercora music search. You can also listen to tracks from the artists, but this doesn't seem to happen in the widget itself - instead, you're redirected to a page on Mercora Music Search with a biography, band pictures and a Flash player. You can see the new widget on Mercora's MySpace page (more MySpace marketing), but thanks to the latest MySpace update, the external links won't work anymore.

While I commend Mercora on plugging in to MySpace, I don't see any huge benefit here. I'm also unclear on what Mercora wants to be - when I tested it back in January, the main offering was a download for your desktop that lets you share the music on your hard drive with your friends. They call it IM Radio. But now it seems they also have a mobile offering that lets you listen to your music library on your Windows Mobile device. What's more, they're building a search engine called Mercora Music Search. All these components are obviously part of a grand plan to catalog the world's music, but for the user it's a little overwhelming.
