Comedian Michael Che is set to sit in the anchor's chair on Saturday Night Live's popular segment, Weekend Update.
Previously a senior correspondent on The Daily Show, Che will join current anchor Colin Jost, marking the first time Weekend Update has had two male anchors. Che will replace Cecily Strong, who will continue to be on the NBC show.
The show's creator, Lorne Michaels, told the New York Times that the decision to hire Che, who worked as a writer on the show last season, came after testing out several combinations. It represents a new era on the show, he added.
“Michael is a strong writer, and he’s really funny,” Michaels told the New York Times. “It’s always difficult to make changes and make Update different from what’s gone before.”
According to comedycentral.com, Che is a "star on the rise." He was named one of Rolling Stone's "50 Funniest People," was featured on John Oliver's "New York Stand-Up Show" and he's done stand up on CBS' "The Late Show with David Letterman."
Che gave a shout out to "The Daily Show" host Jon Stewart on Twitter after news of his new role at SNL broke.
i wanna thank Jon & the entire @TheDailyShow staff for letting me do this. i had a FANTASTIC time there. 1st class all the way— Michael Che (@CheThinks) September 12, 2014
About two weeks ago, he appeared on "The Daily Show" to talk about the developments in Ferguson, where a white officer shot an unarmed black teen. He switches green-screen locations every time Stewart mentions "something terrible" about police shootings in each city he virtually visits. Che ends up in the only place he considers safe for a black man, space.
"No where safer for a black man then the infinite blackness of outer space," he quipped.

There may be more two additions to the S.N.L cast to come, but Michaels told the New York Times that nothing is set in stone yet.
The 40th season of SNL airs on Sept. 27 with Chris Pratt hosting and musical guest Ariana Grande.
