Microsoft has just released a new Windows Media Player plugin for Firefox.

The new Media Player Firefox plugin will work with both Windows Vista and XP, and ensures that Microsoft products will work within the Firefox browser. This is not an extension, so it does require that you download a setup file, which you may need administrative access to the PC for full instillation. The plugin is easy enough to get: navigating to a web page that has the embedded WMP AtiveX control within a Firefox browser, the new plugin will automatically be grabbed for your instillation, though you may need to restart your Firefox browser.

This could make Microsoft seem a bit less monopolistic, especially in light of their antitrust initiatives regarding Google's acquisition of DoubleClick. The scorned company couldn't have picked a better time to be cooperative with the notoriously anti-Microsoft Firefox mantra. Also considering Microsoft's latest battle with Adobe for a superior media player, Microsoft is clearly trying to make up for lost time.
